Lewis Albert Turner was born in Fordham (Newmarket Q1-1923 3B:745), son of Arthur and Rose Minnie TURNER (née CLARK) of Fordham. Lewis had an elder brother Hubert, younger brother Peter and sisters Mary and Minnie. (thanks to Mary & Peter for the photo) In 1939 the family were at 2 Sharmans Road, Fordham - father [17-6-1897] general labourer; mother [26-5-1898]; brother William [1-4-1929] school and sister ? Gillian [16-11-1938]. There are four closed records. |

It is not known if Lewis was with the 9th D.L.I.in North Africa. The Durham Light Infantry captured the town of Lingevres, near Bayeaux in Normandy on 14th June 1944, preventing German forces from holding a vital position blocking the Allied advance across Europe. Two DLI battalions attacked from the north, the 9th along D33A and the 6th on the D187. Dozens fell in the little known battle. CWGC records 27 killed in 6th battalion and 33 in the 9th.
